Beowulf and Grendel
Talk by Lea Grosen Jørgensen.
Esbjerg
In the Beowulf epic, the hero is almost as famous as his opponent: the monster Grendel, who lurks in the marshes and devours Danish warriors night after night.
In this talk, literary historian Lea Grosen Jørgensen dives into Grendel’s role as a villain and his fascinating transformation from the Middle Ages to today.
Drawing on research, film adaptations, and modern retellings, the talk also raises the question: might the outcast Grendel have more in common with the brave Beowulf than we think?
