Every year, on the third weekend of September, Esbjerg becomes a hub of the fantastic. Fantasyfestival is a celebration of a genre that captivates generations, bringing people together through a shared love of storytelling, creativity, and community.
Since the first festival in 2015, the event has grown from a few hundred curious guests to attracting more than 15,000 visitors from across the country. Today, Fantasyfestival is one of Denmark’s largest cultural gathering points for fantasy lovers, and part of what makes the festival unique is the way the entire city is invited into the story.
A genre with depth and relevance
At the heart of the festival lies a passion for the fantasy genre, which has proven to inspire a love of reading and stimulate creativity.
Through fantastical worlds, we can reflect on taboos and difficult subjects from our everyday lives, making the genre a powerful tool for understanding the world we live in. At the festival, we explore this potential in all its forms – from literature and film to games, art, and much more.
The festival is for you who love getting lost in a good book. For you who create digital or handcrafted worlds. For you who play, draw, design, read aloud, dress up, or are simply curious to experience the atmosphere. Here, young and old meet, experts and enthusiasts, creators and fans.
The festival evolves year by year with new initiatives, while the concepts that work are nurtured and allowed to flourish in new versions. This constant renewal ensures that there is always something new to discover when visiting the festival, whether through professional panel discussions, talks, workshops, or film screenings.
