Literature professor Joseph John Campbell was hardly prepared for the enormous cultural influence he would have when he published the scholarly book The Hero with a Thousand Faces in 1949. The book launched an easy-to-understand analytical model that can help explain what kind of hero, and not least the hero of folk tales and mythologies, is. The idea of the “hero’s journey”, which comes from Campbell’s work, is common knowledge today, but does it still hold up?
