Pure Pulp? Monsters in the Works of H.P. Lovecraft and Robert E. Howard
Talk by Martin Wangsgaard Jürgensen
Esbjerg
This talk explores Lovecraft’s and Howard’s use of monsters and villains. Through the lens of 1920s pulp fiction, we’ll examine how these two authors had more on their minds than mere entertainment.
We’ll encounter the maddening creatures from the depths of space imagined by Lovecraft and compare them to the demons, occult forces, and monstrous beasts hurled at Howard’s hard-hitting heroes like Conan the Barbarian and Solomon Kane.
Though their monsters and villains differ wildly, a closer look reveals compelling parallels — showing how both writers rose above the pulp fiction of their time and why their creations still resonate today.
