Many people know Conan the Barbarian, but Howard also created many other heroes. Howard based most of his writing on strong, consistent characters. It is fascinating to delve into his different heroes and hero types, because not only do they make us more knowledgeable about fantasy and suspense literature in Howard's time, his heroes are also a window into Howard's self-understanding.
