# Dune: A classic hero's journey?

Since Frank Herbert’s novel Dune was published in 1965, the stories of the desert planet Dune have fascinated readers and gained a new audience with Villeneuve’s movie. Dune has been called “an adventurous tale that follows Paul Atreides’ classic hero’s journey”. But it is more of a journey into the dark side of the concept of heroism! Dune is a space adventure. Does Dune use fantasy elements in a science fiction story, or is it a critique of fantasy? Was that why Tolkien couldn’t stand the novel?
