Winners of the Danish Fantasy Awards 2021
Danish Fantasy Cover of the Year 2021
Arven fra fortiden (Awen 2) by Nathali and Bettina Liane, cover design by Karin Hald. Publisher: Turbine.
Jury's motivation:
"This cover fits the book’s themes and atmosphere incredibly well. And while the front is strong, it’s the full wraparound design that truly earns the win – especially the beautiful spine. As one of the judges said: I just love swords."
Danish Fantasy Debut of the Year 2021
Legendens ridder – I krig by Jeanette Sigtenborg Rasmussen. Publisher: Straarup & Co.
Jury's motivation:
"The winning debut novel has a clear sense of direction. We understand what’s at stake for the believable main character. We especially appreciated the focus on combat – not glorified heroism, but the feelings of inadequacy and fear. It’s a book aimed at younger fantasy readers, but as a jury we’re very excited to see what comes next in the sequel."
Danish Fantasy Book of the Year 2021
Natskygge (The Rosenholm Trilogy 3) by Gry Kappel Jensen.
Jury's motivation:
"This book takes place in a cohesive and well-developed fantasy universe where much is at stake, yet everything feels grounded. The characters are delightful and diverse without falling into stereotypes, and as readers, we laughed – and cried – with them. The ending is deeply moving and underscores that even when good triumphs, it comes at a cost."
Winners of the Danish Fantasy Awards 2022
Danish Fantasy Cover of the Year 2022
Dragesværdet (The Era of Dragons 2) by C.G. Valentin, cover design by Mette Breth. Publisher: Leitura.
Jury's motivation:
"This year’s winning cover screams fantasy. Holding the book in your hands, there’s no doubt you’re stepping into a magical world begging to be explored.
The cover is visually and stylistically stunning, with beautiful colors and unique details making it stand out.
Last year the judges appreciated a sword on the cover – and who doesn’t love swords? This year, once again, elements on the cover spoke to both judges and readers, as this design also won the public vote.
A sword isn’t a requirement to win – dragons are awesome too!
And the fact that the cover even has its own merchandise? That’s just extra cool."
Danish Fantasy Debut of the Year 2022
De glemte vogtere by Andreas Boeskov. Publisher: Gyldendal.
Jury's motivation:
"This debut winner tells a story about finding one’s place in the world – and what it takes to keep it.
Themes of friendship and loyalty run deep. We learn that even the most unlikely person can save the day, if just given the chance.
It’s a unique world where those typically seen as weak are the ones fighting for us all.
But it’s also a tale exploring the dark sides of human nature – the desire for power and knowledge at any cost.
Imagination runs wild. We’re asked to imagine what would happen if fairy tales were true, and what it means to lose touch with wonder as an adult.
The book resonated with both readers and judges alike.
While it’s labeled a children’s book – don’t be fooled by the cover – it’s very much for all ages. And we judges would really love the sequel – now, please!"
Danish Fantasy Book of the Year 2022
Illiéndirs Flamme (Star Chronicles 5) by Mads Schack-Lindhardt. Publisher: DreamLitt.
Jury's motivation:
"This book takes readers on a wild adventure through portal-traveling, epic battles, and drama – all in perfect balance.
Themes of self-doubt, identity, and inner conflict run deep, softened by the series’ signature humor and sarcasm. Aren’t we all a mix of light and dark?
This book won both the reader’s vote and unanimous praise from the judges.
It’s one of those books you simply can’t put down – and that’s the mark of a truly great read.
The final volume of the series is being released at this year’s festival.
The author is known – by others and himself – as a grumpy old man. But let’s see if we can’t make him smile a little!"
Winners of the Danish Fantasy Awards 2023
Danish Fantasy Cover of the Year 2023
Dragedronningen (The Era of Dragons 3) by C.G. Valentin, cover design by Mette Breth. Publisher: Leitura.
Jury's motivation:
"This year’s Fantasy Cover of the Year is filled with mystique. It’s a technically and artistically impressive design, with a composition that draws the viewer in.
For the second year in a row, the winners are…
METTE BRETH and C.G. VALENTIN with DRAGEDRONNINGEN.
The Danish Fantasy Cover of the Year is sponsored by Bog & Idé Esbjerg."
Danish Fantasy Debut of the Year 2023
Credokæden by Lone Sole. Publisher: Krabat.
Jury's motivation:
"This year’s debut captivates the reader with intriguing characters and a plot that moves at just the right pace.
It’s packed with magical elements and classic Urban Fantasy vibes.
CREDOKÆDEN by LONE SOLE
The Danish Fantasy Debut of the Year is sponsored by Nordisk Film Biografer BROEN."
Danish Fantasy Book of the Year 2023
De falske liv (Silent Worlds 2) by Boris Hansen. Publisher: Carlsen.
Jury's motivation:
"This winning book is brilliantly conceived. The characters are deep and nuanced, facing big philosophical questions.
The plot is fast-paced – like a binge-worthy TV show – and takes the reader through the full spectrum of emotions.
Its original premise is executed so well we wish we could step into the world ourselves.
DE FALSKE LIV by BORIS HANSEN"
Winners of the Danish Fantasy Awards 2024
Danish Fantasy Cover of the Year 2024
Sanjategnet by Majbrit Ravnholt Cramer, cover design by Kat Weber-Hansen.
Jury's motivation:
"A beautiful cover full of mystery. It radiates a magical energy and sense of adventure. It’s a work of art you can return to again and again, always discovering new details and references."
Danish Fantasy Debut of the Year 2024
Istårnet – Istårnet og de syv lys 1 by J. Harris Hatt.
Jury's motivation:
"This award goes to a book that, in true George R.R. Martin style, features a vast cast of characters – a treat for all fans of high fantasy."
Danish Fantasy Book of the Year 2024
Det lysende hjerte – Tavse verdener 3 by Boris Hansen.
Jury's motivation:
"To win a Saga statuette for Danish Fantasy Book of the Year, you must write a quality work that knocks readers off their feet. Strong characters, a clear plot – all of this applies to this year’s winner.
But this book also points beyond itself, commenting on book burnings, radical religion, and political corruption.
It’s confident, funny, and an outstanding reading experience."
